Job Summary

The Athletic Trainer is an integral part of the Information and Operations team, ensuring the health and safety of student-athletes by evaluating, treating, and preventing injuries, managing emergency plans, and maintaining athlete health records. The salary for this position starts at $78,436 and increases with years of experience. This is a full-time, fully on-site role based at KIPP DC Legacy College Prep with an anticipated start date of July 2025.

About the Role
The Athletic Trainer is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating injuries and conditions affecting student-athletes, ensuring their safety and readiness for participation in sports. This role also includes managing emergency planning, maintaining accurate medical records, providing injury prevention education, and overseeing the athletic training clinic, all while collaborating with healthcare professionals and adhering to district and KIPP DC policies.  This is a full-time, 12-month position for a DC Licensed Athletic Trainer .

Location and Type of Work
This is an exempt position and will report to the Regional Athletics Director. As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully onsite . This role is currently required to be onsite or in schools during regular work hours.

Responsibilities

Injury Assessment and Treatment (20% of time)

• Evaluate and assess injuries, illnesses, and conditions that affect the health and well-being of student-athletes.
• Acutely evaluate and diagnose injuries sustained during games or practices.
• Determine if emergency medical services should be summoned.
• Determine if referral to other healthcare professionals is necessary.
• Develop and implement treatment plans, using techniques such as taping, bracing, and therapeutic exercises.

Emergency Planning and Response (20% of time)

• Survey athletic venues for hazards and work with KIPP DC to manage or eliminate them.
• Devise and regularly revise sport-specific emergency action plans.
• Rehearse emergency action plans with appropriate staff and maintain training records.
• Debrief with staff following incidents and adjust plans to improve future outcomes.
• Prioritize presence at athletic activities based on injury rates and severity.

Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation (20% of time)

• Devise and implement injury prevention programs, such as warm-up routines and exercises.
• Consult with student-athletes, parents, and coaches to identify injury trends.
• Construct rehabilitation and modality protocols to assist recovery from injuries.
• Evaluate progress and make appropriate adjustments to care plans.
• Provide ongoing management for injuries/illnesses, adjusting treatment as needed.

Collaboration and Record Management (20% of time)

• Cultivate a team physician relationship and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain accurate, up-to-date medical records for all athletes, including injury reports and treatment plans.
• Ensure pre-participation documentation is accurate and complete.
• Adhere to FERPA and HIPAA standards when handling medical records.
• Collect and store documentation from other healthcare providers related to student-athlete health.

Athletic Training Clinic and Policy Management (20% of time)

• Manage and maintain athletic training equipment and supplies, ensuring cleanliness and availability.
• Create and enforce athletic training policies in collaboration with relevant KIPP DC teams.
• Maintain a safe, inclusive, and orderly athletic training environment.
• Minimize hazards in the athletic training clinic and ensure appropriate sanitization of equipment.
• Review and adjust policies and procedures annually or as needed to stay compliant with standards.

Requirements & Preferences

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited athletic training program
• Must be a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer and in good standing
• District of Columbia athletic training license is in good standing. The license application must be submitted by employment start date and the permit must be provided within sixty (60) days of employment.
• NPI Number required 
• Professional rescuer CPR/First Aid/AED certification

Physical Requirements

• Ability to regularly attend weekend and/or evening events
• Ability to travel to away games with athletics teams
